Cuba accelerates U.S. solar imports during ongoing severe fuel shortage
A fuel blockade has severely restricted traditional energy supplies to Cuba, driving a sudden increase in solar technology imports from the United States.

Cuba is increasingly adopting solar power to offset severe fuel shortages, Oilprice reported. The crisis follows a U.S. naval blockade that prevents fuel shipments from reaching the island. Despite long-standing trade restrictions, imports of American solar technology are rising because alternative energy sources remain limited. [1]
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau cited by Bloomberg reveals a surge in exports of U.S. solar cells and modules to Cuba. However, U.S. sanctions continue to limit imports of battery storage and fuel. This restriction leaves the island dependent on solar power that cannot yet deliver reliable electricity around the clock, according to Oilprice. [1]
The energy emergency intensified following the U.S. intervention in Venezuela, which stopped Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba. The United States also placed a blockade on oil entering Venezuela, cutting off the primary petroleum sources that the island relies on to meet its basic energy requirements. [4]
In short
- A U.S. naval fuel blockade has severely restricted petroleum supplies to Cuba.
- U.S. exports of solar cells and modules to Cuba have surged despite trade sanctions.
- Sanctions on battery imports prevent Cuba from utilizing solar power for round-the-clock electricity.
