Mongabay reported that far right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro placed first in the initial round of Brazil's general election on October 4, 2026. Incumbent leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva finished in second place. The two candidates will now face each other in a second round runoff vote. [1]

Flavio Bolsonaro is a senator and the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Mongabay noted that Jair Bolsonaro was previously barred from holding public office after being convicted of planning a coup d'etat. [1]

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was previously elected to a third non consecutive term in October 2022 after winning a second round runoff vote. [2]
