Delegates will assemble in Armenia this month for the COP17 conference to assess global advancement toward UN nature goals set for 2030, Carbon Brief reported. The meeting marks the first formal global review of progress since nations established the landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework in 2022. [1]

A key United Nations report found that countries are failing to meet 22 of the 23 global nature targets established under the agreement, according to Carbon Brief. The UN document warned that the international community will not achieve its overarching goal to halt and reverse global biodiversity loss by 2030 unless policy implementation accelerates rapidly. [1]

The framework targets focus on restoring degraded ecosystems, securing financial resources for conservation, and protecting native species. Carbon Brief reported that national efforts remain inadequate across almost every metric evaluated ahead of the talks. [1]
