State and local planning authorities in Western Australia have approved a new big battery project for the state main electricity grid, RenewEconomy reported. Melbourne based developer Mint Renewables submitted the application for the project in June. [1]

According to RenewEconomy, the development application covers a 100 megawatt and 800 megawatt hour battery installation. The facility is located in the Shire of Kojonup within the Great Southern region of Western Australia. [1]

The project will provide up to eight hours of energy storage capacity. RenewEconomy reported that the approval from the state planning authority and the local government will further bolster what is the largest isolated electricity network in Australia. [1]

Historically dominated by coal fired generation, the Australian electricity sector generated 265 terawatt hours of power in 2024. Renewable energy sources made up 40 percent of total generation in 2024, while coal accounted for 52 percent and natural gas provided 7.6 percent. [3]
