The short-necked oil beetle has been found in Wales for the first time in nearly 60 years, the Guardian Environment and Around Prague reported. Natural Resources Wales stated that the rare species was discovered at the Castlemartin range in Pembrokeshire. [1][3]

The beetle takes its name from its stubby shape and its defense mechanism. The adult beetles secrete an oily yellow-orange substance from their knee joints when they feel threatened, according to the Guardian Environment. [1]

Habitat loss across the 20th century drove the species to the brink of extinction in Britain, the Guardian Environment reported. The beetle depends on thick vegetation, flower coverage, and solitary bees to survive. [1]

Wales is a country in the United Kingdom that covers an area of 21,218 square kilometres and features over 2,700 kilometres of coastline. Around Prague noted that the rare oil beetle is now breeding again in the region after being missing for decades. [3][5][6]
