German state-owned energy company Uniper has partnered with Turkish firm Biotrend Çevre ve Enerji Yatirimlari AS to study modifying biogas-to-power plants in Turkey to produce biomethane from organic waste, Rigzone reported. [1][4]

According to Rigzone, Uniper chief executive Michael Lewis stated that the partnership could establish a new renewable gas source for European markets and diversify the company's portfolio. Uniper estimates that Turkey holds an untapped biomethane potential of up to 50 terawatt-hours per year. [1]

Biotrend, a subsidiary of Doğanlar Holding, holds an estimated biomethane production potential of about 1.4 terawatt-hours per year, Rigzone reported. Biogas is produced industrially through anaerobic digestion of organic materials, creating a gas composed primarily of methane and carbon dioxide. [1][3]

Uniper is a Düsseldorf-based energy company that has been owned by the German state since late 2022. It was created in 2016 through the separation of E.ON's fossil fuel assets. [4]
