Eku Energy and the Australian Capital Territory government officially turned on the territory's largest battery storage facility on November 4, 2026. RenewEconomy reported that the Williamsdale Battery Energy Storage System is the main project in the territory government's Big Canberra Battery initiative. [1]

The operational facility has a capacity of 250 megawatts and 500 megawatt-hours. According to RenewEconomy, the system is situated in Tuggeranong and aims to enhance energy security for Australia's capital while backing broader electrification efforts. [1]

The local language origin of the name Canberra comes from the Ngunnawal language spoken by indigenous groups in the region, Grokipedia notes. Proposed interpretations of the name include meeting place or terms related to local topographic features. [3]

RenewEconomy reported that the new energy storage system is intended to assist the Australian Capital Territory in reaching its goal of net zero emissions by 2045. [1]
