The European Commission awarded more than 390 million euros on October 19, 2026, to fund 135 new environment and climate action projects across Europe. EUbusiness.com reported that this funding is provided through the European Union's LIFE programme. [1]

The awarded funds account for more than half of the 579 million euros in total investment required for the initiatives, EUbusiness.com reported. According to the publication, the remaining capital will come from national, regional, and local governments, as well as public-private partnerships, businesses, project partners, and civil society organisations. [1]

The LIFE programme has served as the European Union funding instrument for climate action and the environment since 1992. It works by co-financing projects that offer European added value to assist in implementing and updating European Union policy. Up to 2021, the programme had co-financed approximately 4,600 projects across the bloc, contributing about 6.5 billion euros toward environmental protection. [2]

The new projects aim to support the European Union transition to a clean economy while building resilience against extreme weather events, EUbusiness.com reported. The funded initiatives are intended to help the bloc meet its overarching target of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. [1]
