Technology corporation Google and energy resource platform Voltus have announced an expanded agreement to create a virtual power plant in the United States. Energy Storage News, Utility Dive, Energy Monitor, Channel Insider, and NeoTeo all reported the expanded partnership between the two companies within the PJM Interconnection grid region. [1][2][4][5][6]
Under the expanded terms, the virtual power plant capacity is set to reach around one gigawatt. Utility Dive reported that Google added 1,070 megawatts to an initial 100-megawatt agreement signed with Voltus in June to help supply its power needs. Energy Storage News and Energy Monitor both reported the updated project scale as one gigawatt, while NeoTeo noted varying reported capacity figures. [1][2][4][6]
Demand response revenue in the PJM market rose by 240 percent from 2024 to 2025, reaching 523.6 million dollars according to Utility Dive. Emergency demand response made up 88 percent of that revenue total. Google is an American multinational technology firm focused on cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and online services. [2][7]
Industry sources stated in Utility Dive that large-scale corporate contracts of this nature represent a turning point for distributed resources in wholesale energy markets. Google is using the contracted capacity to manage energy demands across the regional transmission network. [2]
