India's renewable electricity generation surpassed 100 billion units in a single quarter for the first time during the second quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year, reaching 101 billion units. Output expanded 11 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026-27, according to a report by Deccan Herald citing an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. [1]

Solar generation rose 39 percent to 51 billion units in the latest quarter, while wind power generation grew 29 percent to 45 billion units. This expansion occurred during a period when coal supply faced pressure, Deccan Herald reported. [1]

Thermal power also recorded growth over the same period. Deccan Herald reported that coal-fired electricity generation grew 12.5 percent to 351 billion units, representing approximately 66 percent of total electricity generation, compared to 312 billion units, or 65 percent, in the previous year. [1]

India is the third-largest producer and consumer of electricity globally after China and the United States, accounting for roughly 6 to 7 percent of global output. The country generated 2,059.3 terawatt-hours in the 2024-25 fiscal year, with 23 percent originating from non-fossil sources. [6]
