National Grid Electricity Transmission has acquired a 73-acre site in Teesside to construct a proposed electricity substation, Tokenpost and Crypto Briefing reported. The facility is expected to add more than one gigawatt of capacity and could potentially become the largest substation in Great Britain. [1][2][3][4]
The land acquisition at Dorman Point covers approximately 29.5 hectares, Tokenpost noted. The proposed project forms part of the Great Grid Upgrade, an ongoing initiative managed by National Grid to expand and modernize the British electricity transmission network. [1]
Under the current plans, the substation will connect to a private-wire system designed to service a nearby planned artificial intelligence data center as well as a battery energy storage system, Tokenpost and Traders Union reported. The battery storage facility will absorb power during periods of abundant supply or low prices and dispatch electricity back to the grid when demand rises. [1][4]
National Grid plc is a British multinational utility company headquartered in London that owns and operates the high-voltage electricity transmission network across Great Britain. This grid connects power stations and major substations to ensure generated electricity meets nationwide demand. [5][6]
