Energy developer Fit Energy has announced plans to build a fuel cell power generation facility and data center project in Newport Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Power Magazine, Construction Review, Yahoo Finance, EP Magazine, and Tomorrow's World Today all reported on the announcement made on October 6. The project will redevelop land that has previously been mined and quarried. [1][6][7][8][9]

The local government in Newport Township granted zoning approval for both the data center and power generation uses in August of this year, according to Power Magazine. On October 6, Fit Energy stated that engineering work and the remaining permitting processes are currently underway ahead of starting construction on the site. [1]

A fuel cell is an electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy from a fuel and an oxidizing agent into electricity through redox reactions. Unlike standard batteries, fuel cells can generate electricity continuously for as long as fuel and oxygen are supplied. [11]

Power availability has increasingly become a primary constraint for data center expansion across the energy sector, TradingKey reported. Furthermore, expanding demand from data centers and the transportation sector is expected to drive growth in the global fuel cells market through 2035, according to IndexBox. [2][4]
