Australian company Generation Steel intends to invest 850 million dollars to construct an electric arc furnace steel mill in Collie, Western Australia. RenewEconomy reported that the facility will be the first new steel mill built in Australia in more than 35 years. [1]

The facility will also become the first steel mill in Australia to contract its electricity supply completely from renewable sources. RenewEconomy reported that Generation Steel secured a deal with mining company BHP to utilize power generation capacity that BHP is no longer using. [1]

Generation Steel was formerly known as Green Steel WA. The project will be located at Collie, a town in the south-west region of Western Australia that is currently transitioning away from coal toward new green industries. [1]
