Rich nations must end fossil fuel production within two decades
A new study by Climate Analytics shows wealthy energy-producing countries must quickly phase out fossil fuels to limit global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Wealthy fossil fuel-producing nations need to begin cutting their output immediately and completely stop production within 20 years, according to a report published by Climate Analytics on October 22, 2026. The institute stated that this timeline is necessary to limit climate overshoot and return global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. [1]
The report, titled End of the Pipeline: Managed vs Market-driven Routes to Ending Fossil Fuel Production, explains that coordinated reductions by rich countries can reduce pressure on poorer and more vulnerable producers as global demand for fossil fuels declines. [1]
Transitioning away from oil and gas remains a central focus during global energy supply challenges. As FTMQ Climate reported earlier, a supply crisis linked to conflict in Iran previously renewed focus on alternative energy sources, including green and blue hydrogen, while creating major earnings increases for oil producers. [2]
Climate Analytics stated that managing the transition through structured cooperation will ensure a fairer shift for lower-income countries rather than relying purely on market forces. [1]
In short
- Climate Analytics reported that wealthy fossil fuel producers must end output within 20 years.
- Phasing out production on this timeline aims to bring global warming back below 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100.
- The report calls for coordinated output reductions to protect poorer producing nations.
