Scotland is preparing for travel disruption as Storm Boelo, the second named storm to hit the region in two days, brings heavy rain and winds with gusts forecast up to 80mph. BBC News Science and STV News both reported that rail operators and transport officials are bracing for impact. Transport services are currently running, but rail lines will experience closures and severe speed restrictions. [1][4]

According to BBC News Science, ScotRail confirmed several train line closures beginning late Saturday into Sunday. The Glasgow Central to Ayr line will close between Kilwinning and Ayr from 21:00 on Saturday, while the Glasgow Queen Street to Oban and Mallaig lines will close from around 22:00. On Sunday, services from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and Wick or Thurso will also be closed along selected sections. Network Rail added that trains will run at reduced speeds across large areas of the network. [1][3]

The Network Rail media centre, STV News, The Railway Magazine, and RailAdvent all reported that an amber weather warning was issued for parts of Scotland ahead of the storm. As FTMQ Climate reported earlier, the Met Office previously issued yellow weather warnings across Scotland for both Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, with Network Rail Scotland planning speed restrictions on train routes over the weekend. [3][4][5][6][10]

The 2026, 27 European windstorm season officially covers severe weather events across the continent from September 2026 through August 2027. Transport authorities will continue monitoring conditions as Storm Boelo moves across Scottish rail infrastructure over the weekend. [1][3][7]
