United States President Donald Trump announced a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire on social media on Sunday. However, Oilprice reported that the deal is considerably narrower than first suggested, citing a White House official who told Axios that the proposal only covers attacks on oil refineries. [1][4][5][7][8]
Moscow has not officially confirmed the agreement, according to Oilprice. Russian strikes on Ukrainian power infrastructure have continued despite the announcement. [1]
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he had not seen the deal but supports the concept, CBC and Modern Diplomacy reported. Russia has previously demanded recognition of occupied lands, guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO, and the lifting of international sanctions during past negotiations. [5][7][9]
The proposal follows previous US actions regarding fuel markets. As FTMQ Climate reported earlier, President Trump recently announced a deal for Russia to supply diesel fuel to the United States and global markets to address elevated prices. [11]
