A series of intense and unpredictable storms exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern has hit East Asia over recent months. According to BBC News, the wave of wild weather has killed dozens of people, closed major airports, and destroyed crops and infrastructure across the region. [1][2]

The BBC reports that coastal regions in the Philippines, Taiwan, China, and Japan have faced extraordinary conditions. In October, a storm large enough to engulf almost all of Taiwan forced the island to shut down, while Super Typhoon Dolphin hit China's Jiangsu province in August. [1]

East Asia is a region that includes China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan, along with the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The region borders the Pacific Ocean to its east. [3]
