The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission proposed new measures on Thursday to speed up approvals for natural gas infrastructure, including pipelines and liquefied natural gas export facilities. Utility Dive and CleanTechnica reported that the regulator introduced the proposals during its monthly meeting. TradeWinds News reported that the agency proposed a blanket authorization process to accelerate project reviews. [1][2][5]
FERC Chairman Laura Swett stated that the proposals are intended to ensure that gas-fired power plants can access necessary fuel supplies. Utility Dive reported Swett saying that infrastructure bottlenecks represent the only current restriction on getting American natural gas to market. CleanTechnica reported that the agency proposed two new measures to speed up project approvals, while Oil and Gas Middle East noted that the plan includes a three-tier blanket authorization program for facility expansion. [1][2][3]
CleanTechnica reported that environmental advocates warned the proposed measures could allow natural gas projects to gain approval without proper oversight or review of air quality impacts. UA News reported via The Hill that the proposed regulatory changes specifically target the expansion of export terminals across the United States. [2][6]
Separately, LNG Industry reported that the regulator permitted the introduction of feed gas at the Sabine Pass terminal. The regulatory proposals will now face public review and comment before final implementation decisions are made. [1][4]
