The Western Australia government will roll out a simplified version of a proposed national market design to increase its renewable energy share, RenewEconomy reported. The state announced a renewable energy target of 75 per cent by the 2030/31 financial year. [1]
RenewEconomy reported that the policy mechanism is intended to support the state as it moves away from coal generation and nearly doubles its current share of renewable power over five years. [1]
As FTMQ Climate reported earlier, Western Australia set a formal target of reaching 75 per cent renewable electricity by 2030/31. The state also plans to close all state-owned coal generators by the end of the decade. Mandatory renewable energy targets require electricity vendors to source specified amounts of power from renewable sources. [4]
The state government describes the planned policy framework as a simplified version of a national market design to fill the energy supply gap left by the phase-out of coal-fired generation, RenewEconomy reported. [1]
