Australian grid batteries trend toward longer storage durations and new chemistries
Grid-scale battery storage in Australia is rapidly shifting toward longer discharge durations and evolving chemical compositions to meet grid demands.

RenewEconomy reported on October 30, 2026, that grid-scale battery storage durations in Australia are increasing significantly. Storage capacity is expanding from earlier short-duration models toward systems capable of delivering power over longer periods. [1]
According to RenewEconomy, early developments began with the Hornsdale battery in South Australia, which was commissioned in 2017 with just over one hour of storage duration. By 2019, the first two-hour battery went online at the Lake Bonney wind farm. Only two batteries with two-hour storage durations were operating in Australia by 2023. [1]
RenewEconomy reported that market mandates accelerated the move to four-hour storage durations. This shift was supported by requirements for the country's two largest battery developments located at Collie in Western Australia. [1]
Along with longer storage durations, battery chemistries are continuing to change to meet evolving power grid requirements, according to RenewEconomy. [1]
In short
- Australia's Hornsdale big battery was commissioned in 2017 with just over one hour of storage capacity.
- By 2023, Australia had only two operational two-hour battery storage systems.
- Mandates for major battery projects at Collie drove the adoption of four-hour storage durations.
