Tesla has activated its Powershare Home Backup capability for the Model 3 and Model Y, allowing the vehicles to supply electricity to houses during power outages, InsideEVs and Electrek reported. Before this update, the Cybertruck was the only vehicle in the automaker's lineup that offered emergency backup functionality, according to reports from InsideEVs, Electrek, and Drive Tesla Canada. [1][2][7]

According to Electrek, there are specific equipment and timing requirements for the home backup capability. Electrek reported that home integration requires a Tesla Powerwall 3 battery system. Furthermore, Tesla only guarantees that Powershare will function on new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that were ordered on or after October 1, 2026, meaning older vehicles may be excluded. [2]

Drive Tesla Canada reported that the company is also adding vehicle-to-load features across its United States vehicle lineup alongside the expansion. Solar Power World reported that with these updates, Tesla's full vehicle lineup can now provide home backup energy. [5][7]

Electrek noted that competing automakers entered the vehicle-to-home energy segment much earlier. Ford Motor Company and General Motors have been selling electric vehicles capable of backing up homes for years, according to Electrek. The update brings Tesla's two highest-volume vehicle models into the bidirectional power ecosystem. [2]
